Farmer Mark
Are you keen to embed growing and farming into the new curriculum but unsure how to go about it?
My experiences as science and IT teacher, ex-farmer, current STEM ambassador and founder of Discovering Our Countryside, and other online teaching resources, means I have a lot of experience in helping schools with outdoor activities and linking farming and food production to the new curriculum.
If you would like any help with outdoor activities, gardening clubs or embedding farming and food production into the Science and Technology elements of the new curriculum, I’d welcome the opportunity to have a chat with you – please call me on 07811296713. I could manage up to 4 ‘lessons’ in a day to different classes.
Here’s some images and feedback of lessons I have done so far
The name ‘Farmer Mark’ came from this class who dubbed me ‘Farmer Mark’
“Hi Mark, thank you so much for coming last week! The children absolutely loved it! You’re officially known as Farmer Mark now! The children also enjoyed using your website and watching the clips which gave them an insight into a real working farm. Your website is very informative and will link in extremely well with the new national curriculum.” (Appleton School)
Planting Microgreens
Part of the Yr1-2 Plants – what use are they theme.

Planting Microgreens
“Thanks again for a fantastic afternoon. I would certainly recommend this approach to colleagues as it’s very hands on and very cross-curricular. It’s also very inclusive as I had all abilities eagerly participating and wanting to care for their plants. You also have a wonderful way with the children that not only comes across within the classroom but also in your resources (i.e. website & videos) that you have created for this project. I will definitely contact you in the future to work with future classes of mine.” (Collinwood Primary)
Planting Potatoes
Planting Potatoes – I can help you get planting in your school. Then link this to the curriculum, like with this Potato Food Story activity.

Planting our own potatoes

Food Stories – learning how farmers grow food
Investigating Soil
As part of the Yr1-2 Plants theme did scientific mud pies before doing mud pie pie charts!

These are just a selection we can also do lessons about individual Food Stories like milk, potatoes, bees and more
