  • Livestock over Winter – Some animals are seasonal breeders only mating at certain times of year, like sheep in Autumn, others like pigs will breed all year round.
  • A special harvest is about to begin – Shows farmers harvesting some late crops then ploughing land for spring, also showing their skills off in a ploughing match. The harvesting of Christmas Trees is covered too.
  • Using Wildlife to help you celebrate Christmas. – Gives details of how to make a traditional Christmas Wreath decoration using foliage from the countryside.

  • How can you enjoy your 5-a-day all year round? This looks at the different ways we use to preserve food so we can enjoy it out of season. Freeze it! Cool it! Fly it! Cover it! Time it!
  • Dressing a Lambs carcass. – Shows how your local butcher dresses or butchers a lambs carcass for you to enjoy your favourite cuts of lamb such as chops, leg or shoulder of lamb.
  • Helping wildlife with the seasons. – Shows how you can help the wildlife cycle by feeding birds in your garden or school. This section gives you advice and tips on feeding birds and also how you can make your own fat balls.

We are offering a limited number of schools (Hull, East or North Yorkshire area) a chance to take part in the pilot of an exciting, science curriculum linked Discovering Science on the Farm Project “Food production in a changing climate” , involving farm visits, growing in school, lesson plans, video blog, Twitter and Facebook updates.

Pupils will follow the story of one of the farm’s food products, investigating the science farmer’s use in its production, and then produce their own “Discovering Science on the Farm Story” of this product using photos taken on their visit, images provided by the farmer and research from other websites and reading.

The “Discovering Science on the Farm Project” will form a theme of curriculum related lessons based around “Food production in a changing climate” for pupils which will involve:

The Programme

Starting in September 2013 and based on the proposed new Science Curriculum document a programme of farm visits directly linked to the learning outcomes detailed in the programme of study. We will work closely with each pilot school to produce these themes; with us doing most of the work and the pilot schools teacher making suggestions and giving feedback.

  • A farm visit in October highlighting plantings of new crops and livestock winter preparations.
  • A second farm visit in June 2014 to follow the crops and livestock as the annual  seasons progress.

Mr Rook will host other classes by arrangement outside the curriculum lesson programme and we will put you in direct contact for these visits.

Summer 2014

  • Up close and personal experience with some of our chickens which we have in our farmyard run.
  • See, hear, feel the various stages of our crops we grow – plants through to finished product!
  • A chance to see some of our beef cattle (time of year dependant)
  • Investigate and learn from our conservation areas of the farm….how many bugs can we find?
    • Why are they important to our farm?
  • Tractor and trailer ride for the whole class – take in the view over the Vale of York
    • How many wind turbines and power stations can the children see?
  • A chance to visit up close our 50KW wind turbine producing all the electricity for the Free-Range chicken sheds.
  • See how our Free-Range chickens live
    • (Time of day depending) See how we collect and pack 24000 eggs every day in our packing shed.
  • See and investigate some of the big machines that we use to cultivate and harvest our crops.

We aim to produce six lessons plans, specifically using the farms as the practical example, to develop the Science curriculum concepts and learning outcomes.  An example for upper Key Stage 2/Lower Key Stage 3 is available to download below and the associated video can be seen in the video player above.

It is by no means a final document and this is the area we would really appreciate your help and ideas so that we provide you with something useful that you can use to support your teaching.

These lesson plans and farm visits will be supported by 10/12 minute videos as well as our regular fortnightly programs which follow the crops and livestock through the seasons and the food production annual cycle.  We believe this will bring an understanding to the children of weather and other factors which affect food security for their future.

We will run a competition for your school class where they choose a food and follow it from field to their own plates.   We will help them research and provide background information for them to build their project, including cameras for use on their farm visits.

‘Where food comes from’, ‘How it is produced’ and ‘Will farming will be able to feed the growing population without further damaging the planets resources’, are all topics which cannot be discussed without farm visits. Rural East Yorkshire offers a unique opportunity to teach these issues in familiar and accessible surroundings.

Man, beast and bees bringing in the harvest…

  • The harvesting of crops – shows farmers harvesting various crops such as cereals, potatoes peas. Also shows how a combine harvester threshes the corn in one process

  • Out and about in summer – Give Mario a break! Things to look out this summer. Also looks at some outdoor activities for school and summer holidays.
  • How are crops doing? – Looks at how crops we saw planted in spring are doing in early summer. How bees have harvested the fields of yellow to make honey.
  • Dairy Products– Shows milk being processed to produce cream for your Wimbledon Strawberries and then bottled as either Whole, Skimmed or semi-skimmed milk. Also explains why milk is an excellent drink for athletes or after any exercise

Hedgerow Feasts, Cow’s Stomach feasts, Tasty feasts – The Food Chains of Life…

  • Hedgerow feasts –.We look at some of the plants and animals you may find in a hedgerow and how we can link these in food chains.
  • Cow’s stomach feasts – We look at how ruminants rely of micro-beasts in their 4 stomachs to help them digest grass making them very important to food production as this allows us to produce food from land we would not otherwise be able to use.
  • Tasty feasts – We look at how strawberries are produced in time for Wimbledon snacks

Summer brings – grass, beetroot, ripe tomatoes, life to hedgerows…

  • Grass at Last – We revisit the lambs we saw turned out after lambing and we see our calves getting their first taste of fresh grass
  • Beetroot Seed & Ripe Tomatoes – We say strange beetroot seed planted and then the tomatoes we saw planted, sorted by robots, pollinated by bees are finally picked and sorted ready for you to enjoy in the shops.
  • Hedgerows – We take a look at what a hedge is, what use it is and why they are important.

Plants of May – Busy Birds, Planting Lettuce & Brussel Sprouts, Meat from Pigs…

  • Busy Birds – Lots of spring activity to look out for, birds building nests, singing and new chicks.
  • Planting…– We see the schools visiting Stockbridge Technology Centre planting lettuce and then see how farmers plant lettuce and sprouts on a commercial scale.
  • Pigs for bacon – The pigs we have followed from farrowing are weighed to see if they are ready for bacon. We also follow a local butcher as he explains how a pig carcass in butchered into the various pork and bacon cuts

April Showers – Lambs, Potatoes, Felling trees in our wood…

This program looks at April’s seasonal changes and happenings in the countryside, and down on the farm, a bit like the saying April Showers we see a cascade of new life and sowing for future new life.

Lambing – Follow lambing on Oliver’s Farm where we see lots of new born lambs and the work involved in looking after all these new lives, which involves both experienced shepherds and fresh, enthusiastic young shepherds.

Planting Potatoes – We see the first school visits of the year to Stockbridge Technology Centre and see the children and their teachers busy planting potatoes and wild flowers.

Return to wood for tree felling– Andrew Harrison explains why he is felling trees in Primrose Wood, we return a month later to see the effect.

We are offering a limited number of schools (Hull, East or North Yorkshire area) a chance to take part in the pilot of an exciting, science curriculum linked Discovering Science on the Farm Project “Food production in a changing climate” , involving farm visits, growing in school, lesson plans, video blog, Twitter and Facebook updates.

Pupils will follow the story of one of the farm’s food products, investigating the science farmer’s use in its production, and then produce their own “Discovering Science on the Farm Story” of this product using photos taken on their visit, images provided by the farmer and research from other websites and reading.

The “Discovering Science on the Farm Project” will form a theme of curriculum related lessons based around “Food production in a changing climate” for pupils which will involve:

The Programme

An exciting farm visit for one of your classes in June.

  • Up close and personal experience with some of our chickens which we have in our farmyard run.
  • See, hear, feel the various stages of our crops we grow – plants through to finished product!
  • A chance to see some of our beef cattle (time of year dependant)
  • Investigate and learn from our conservation areas of the farm….how many bugs can we find?
    • Why are they important to our farm?
  • Tractor and trailer ride for the whole class – take in the view over the Vale of York
    • How many wind turbines and power stations can the children see?
  • A chance to visit up close our 50KW wind turbine producing all the electricity for the Free-Range chicken sheds.
  • See how our Free-Range chickens live
      • (Time of day depending) See how we collect and pack 24000 eggs every day in our packing shed.
  • See and investigate some of the big machines that we use to cultivate and harvest our crops.

Mr Rook will host other classes by arrangement outside the curriculum lesson programme and we will put you in direct contact for these visits.

Autumn 2013

Starting in September 2013 and based on the proposed new Science Curriculum document a programme of farm visits directly linked to the learning outcomes detailed in the programme of study. We will work closely with each pilot school to produce these themes; with us doing most of the work and the pilot schools teacher making suggestions and giving feedback.

  • A farm visit in October highlighting plantings of new crops and livestock winter preparations.
  • A second farm visit in June 2014 to follow the crops and livestock as the annual  seasons progress.

We aim to produce six lessons plans, specifically using the farms as the practical example, to develop the Science curriculum concepts and learning outcomes.  An example for upper Key Stage 2/Lower Key Stage 3 is available to download below and the associated video can be seen in the video player above.

It is by no means a final document and this is the area we would really appreciate your help and ideas so that we provide you with something useful that you can use to support your teaching.

These lesson plans and farm visits will be supported by 10/12 minute videos as well as our regular fortnightly programs which follow the crops and livestock through the seasons and the food production annual cycle.  We believe this will bring an understanding to the children of weather and other factors which affect food security for their future.

We will run a competition for your school class where they choose a food and follow it from field to their own plates.   We will help them research and provide background information for them to build their project, including cameras for use on their farm visits.

‘Where food comes from’, ‘How it is produced’ and ‘Will farming will be able to feed the growing population without further damaging the planets resources’, are all topics which cannot be discussed without farm visits. Rural East Yorkshire offers a unique opportunity to teach these issues in familiar and accessible surroundings.

Spring Marches On…

This program looks at more seasonal changes and happenings in the countryside, and down on the farm, as we are now in the middle of April with this very cold late spring.

  • Calving – We finally manage to capture some cows calving on film – full graphic details so beware! We show how soon a newborn calf is up and suckling it’s mother’s milk and also how the farmer’s jobs and responsibilities for this calf start from day 1
  • Sowing and harvesting – Whilst farmers are busy sowing crops such as peas and wheat in the fields, growers are already harvesting some of the crops like cucumbers, which are grown under glass.
  • Birds Courting – Wildlife is now bounding into spring with frogs and toads mating and producing spawn, birds are already courting to find mates and produce eggs. Also a timely reminder about dogs and the ‘Countryside Code’ during this important time for both wildlife and newborn calves and lambs

Already the middle of March – so what is happening in the countryside?

This program looks at the mid-March seasonal happenings – in the countryside, and down on the farm.

  • Bees – Explains why bees are so important, giving a brief explanation of their role in the life cycle of a flowering plant.
  • Busy bees Busy Farmers –Shows bees busy pollinating tomatoes, and farmers busy in the fields, fertilising winter crops and sowing spring crops.
  • Secret Calves and lambs? – Explains how we have so far been unsuccessful in catching calves being born on film, but how we are more confident of catching lambs being born as our farmer has 2000 ewes to lamb. We see these ewes being brought inside, fed and vaccinated in preparation for lambing.

4 March 2013 – Winter slow to release its grip!

This program looks at the importance of weather how it effects wildlife and the onset of spring, how we can cheat the weather to some extent by growing plants and using bees in a greenhouse, but not without a cost. Also how it can still cause problems with keeping livestock like pigs outside.

  • The snow hath retreated – Looks at the signs of spring. What can you look for as an indication that spring has sprung! Also how you and your school can get involved with helping scientists analyse if spring is getting earlier like some people believe.
  • Beating the weather? –Another visit to the greenhouses to see how the tomatoes are progressing, as well as cucumbers and surprisingly strawberries.
  • The weather can kill! – This follows our newborn piglets through to weaning, looking at what different systems are available for rearing pigs and how the UK pig herd has some of the highest welfare standards in the world – which we should be supporting if we believe in animal welfare.

18 February 2013  – New life, follow it and even help!

This program looks at new life starting with the onset of the new spring, new plants growing, new piglets being born and how you can help with birds nesting and rearing new young.

  • Preparing for Calving and Sows Farrowing – Shows a farmer fetching in his cattle ready for calving in the spring, Then goes on to show how piglets are born all year round. With footage of piglets actually being born .
  • New Life in the Greenhouse –Show the tomatoes we saw being planted and grown as seedlings now being transferred and set out in greenhouses.
  • Bird Nesting Boxes – helping new life. – Helping a little owl then how you can help birds after a hard winter. Jon Traill a Yorkshire Wildlife Trust field officer gives tips and advice on types of bird boxes and where to place them for best results.

  • Milk beyond the farm – Shows that the safety of this important foodstuff starts with storage on the farm and then shows how it is treated to keep it safe to consume and then how it is packed into the cartons of liquid milk you buy as a consumer.
  • Potatoes beyond the farm – This shows how the surplus of harvest is stored and gradually used to keep the shops of Britain supplied year round – without the need for ‘fresh’ imports of potatoes from abroad as some shops would have you believe. It also shows how one of our favourite potato products is made – Crisps!
  • Water Water everywhere – We had intended to revisit our wood, but like everywhere else it is very wet or even flooded. So instead we look at the effects of the floods on farming and the countryside and also look at why water is so important to farming and food production.

  • Farm Animals and Computers – Shows how computers are used to monitor pigs feeding during pregnancy and also how they are used to help farmers weigh ingredients so they can mix the correct food ingredients for cattle. It also shows how even milking cows and goats is helped by the use of computer to monitor how much milk is produced.
  • In your local Greenhouse – Shows how machines are used to plant seeds then how computers and robots are used to then sort the growing seedlings. It also shows how human input is still needed for many jobs that computers cannot do – yet!.
  • A year in a wood – we start our regular look in a wood. This program looks at what happens to the leaves which feel from the trees in Autumn and shows you how you can investigate the mini-beasts on leaf litter
